Tiers[edit]

Tiers and entries from the IcebergThreads version[2]. Notes after a dash are shortened from the author's explanations.

Tier 1[edit]

  • Fruit of the Loom cornucopia – This is one I can say I remember, too. Yet despite so many memories, the Fruit of the Loom clothing brand has apparently never had a cornucopia in its logo since its establishment in 1851. The brand…
  • Kit-Kat – There's no hyphen. It's just "Kit Kat".
  • Looney Toons – It was always "Looney TUNES". The only reason why I knew that is because in Poland, they directly translated it to "Zwariowane Melodie". Where "melodie" means "tunes". ("Toons" would make sense, too,…
  • "Luke, I am your father" – What Darth Vader actually said was "*NO,* I am your father"
  • Nelson Mandela died in prison – Where the name "Mandela effect" comes from. Many people have false memories of Nelson Mandela dying in prison in the 1980s, even though he actually died in retirement in 2013. People may have just…
  • Szczecin is located by the sea – Nope! Szczecin is a city located in northwestern Poland (West Pomerania), by the German border, near the Oder river and a large lake, about 100km from the Baltic sea. People get confused and think…
  • The Monopoly man's monocle – The Monopoly man never had a monocle, actually. Mr. Peanut from the Planters peanuts company does, which may be what confused people.

Tier 2[edit]

  • Berenstein Bears – It's actually "Berenstain Bears". With an A.
  • Blue Frugo – Yes, blue Frugo does exist now (and it's really good), but it didn't initially. Frugo is a Polish brand of fruit drinks, initially sold between 1996 and 2002, then returning in 2011 for a while, and…
  • Burglar emoji – It never existed. It's from BitLife. Fucking BITLIFE.
  • C3PO had two golden legs – One of his shins was silver. It's possible people just paid more attention to his red arm than his shin, which is why they didn't notice it.
  • Cukier waniliowy – Nie waniliowy, tylko waniliNOWY. Wanilin, nie wanilia.
  • Curious George's tail – Curious George never had a tail. See, this one doesn't make sense. He's supposed to be a monkey. Monkeys have tails, apes don't. If he doesn't have a tail, wouldn't that make him an ape?
  • Febreeze – It's "Febreze". Three Es, not four.
  • Fruit Loops – They're called "Froot Loops" and they use the cereals to spell the Os in both words in the logo.
  • "Gówno, nic nie zrobiłem, gówno" – Said by Polish-British YouTuber Stuu when faced with severe allegations, loosely translated to "shit, I didn't do shit". In reality, he said "gówno, nic nie ROBIŁEM, gówno". Past continuous, not past…
  • Interview with a Vampire – It's called "Interview with THE Vampire"
  • Jiffy – The peanut butter brand was always called "Jif", never "Jiffy", but many people remember the latter. Perhaps that is because the first three letters match, and "jiffy" is an actual word.
  • Maya the Bee is a Polish production – It's actually Japanese, but famous Polish musician Zbigniew Wodecki sang the theme song for its Polish version, which is why many of my compatriots get confused. Also, since the production is…
  • "Mirror, mirror on the wall" – She said "MAGIC mirror on the wall". MAGIC MIRROR. NOT "MIRROR, MIRROR". All 22 years of my life have been a lie. I, too, very vividly remember it being "mirror, mirror". (But that may be because the…
  • "Mój tata mówi na niego 'pierdolony sierściuch'" – "Od Przedszkola do Opola" was a Polish musical television series for kindergarteners that ran from 1995 to 2007. In one episode, when a child was asked what her dad calls their pet cat, she were said…
  • Pikachu's black tail tip – Pikachu's tail tip was always yellow, only the base of his tail is brown. But again, *I know what I saw*.
  • The Mona Lisa doesn't smile – She does! It's faint, but it's there. You could say it's ambiguous.
  • "We are the champions... of the world" – The famous song by Queen does not, in fact, end with "...of the world".

Tier 3[edit]

  • Bic White-Out – The correction tape by Bic is called WITE-out. Pronounced the same, but no H.
  • Captain Crunch – It's "Cap'n Crunch".
  • Daylight Savings Time – It's Daylight *SAVING* Time. I still call it "Daylight SavingS Time", though, because I am a part of this Mandela effect, and I just got used to it.
  • Double Stuff Oreo – Only one F. Double "STUF" Oreo.
  • "Hello, Clarice" – In "Silence of the Lambs" (1991), Hannibal Lecter greets Clarice Starling with the words "good evening" when they first meet. He has no reason to know her name just yet at that moment, but many…
  • Henry VIII holding a turkey leg – King Henry VIII never held a turkey leg in any portrait.
  • Pink-haired Kylian Mbappé – Kylian Mbappé's hair was blue, not pink
  • Sex in the City – They do have sex in the city, but the show is called "Sex AND the City".
  • Shaggy's Adam's apple – Shaggy from Scooby-Doo doesn't have a visible Adam's apple.
  • The Flinstones – It's "The Flin*T*stones". Guys, honestly. Flint is a type of rock. It's a cartoon about cavemen who live "modern" lives in the Stone Age, but have every common modern household tool made of stone. Of…
  • "W maju, w tramwaju, kochaj mnie" – Tam jest "...w *Kłaju*, w tramwaju"
  • "Would you like to play a game?" – No, Jigsaw/John Kramer doesn't say that in "Saw" (2004). What he says is "I want to play a game". It's not like he's giving them a choice.

Tier 4[edit]

  • Cliff Energy – It's "Clif" with one F. You can see where the confusion came from since the art on the packaging quite literally shows a mountain climber.
  • Cup o' Noodles – It's just "Cup Noodles". There's no "o'".
  • "Fly, my pretties, fly!" – The Wicked Witch of the West in "Wizard of Oz" just tells her monkeys to "Fly, fly, fly!"
  • Judge Judy used a gavel – She actually did use a gavel to maintain order in the courtroom in a few episodes from the 90s, but not since then. She usually just shouts "HEY!!" or slams her hand (that she holds her pen in) into…
  • "Heigh-ho, heigh-ho, it's off to work we go" – It's "...home from work we go". Returning from work, not heading for it.
  • Mike n' Ike – It's just "Mike AND Ike". Simple as that.
  • Snoopy's black tail – Snoopy's tail is white with a black spot.
  • The Statue of Liberty is on Ellis Island – The Statue of Liberty is on Liberty Island, which is NEXT TO Ellis Island.
  • Uncle Sam's striped hat – Uncle Sam, the personified mascot of the US government, doesn't have a red-and-white striped hat, it's actually plain white. Though does make sense why people would remember his hat to look more like…

Tier 5[edit]

  • Chartreuse is a pink colour – Chartreuse is the intermediary colour between yellow and green, and is named after a French liqueur which is LIGHT GREEN. Yet somehow, people out there have vivid memories of it being... bright pink?…
  • "I'm a Barbie girl in a Barbie world" – This one's very minor, but as far as I am to understand, it's "...in THE Barbie world".
  • "I walk a lonely road, the only road that I have ever known" – It was "the only ONE that I have ever known".
  • Smokey the Bear – His name is just Smokey Bear. There is no "the".
  • The Target logo has two rings – Nope, just one! There's one ring and a red centre.
  • Reba McIntyre – Her name is Reba McENtire.

Tier 6[edit]

  • Alexander Hamilton was president – He was one of the Founding Fathers and the Secretary of Treasury between 1789 and 1795, but never president. He was killed in a duel with Aaron Burr in 1804 at age 47 or 49. Might be because he's on…
  • "Chytra baba z Radomia" – The "Sly Old Woman of Radom" is a video recording that went viral c.a. 2011, depicting an older woman approaching a table at a charity Christmas table in the city of Radom to take some of the free…
  • Flagstaff is the capital of Arizona – It's Phoenix. Flagstaff is just the largest city. Kind of like how Albany is the capital of New York, and New York City is the most populous city.
  • "...had just settled down for a long winter's nap" – In the 1823 poem "A Visit From St. Nicholas/'Twas the Night Before Christmas..." many people forget the original line was "...had just SETTLED OUR BRAINS for a long winter's nap". Perhaps because the…
  • John Paul II died on the 1st of April – He actually died the day after: 2nd April, 2005. I don't know whether or not this is a more universal Mandela effect, because, well, he was the Pope, but it's only really in Poland that I was met…
  • "Me Tarzan, you Jane" – It's the other way around: "Me Jane, you Tarzan." Not only do people get the quote wrong, they also forget which character actually said it. But I'm guilty of that, too.
  • Mickey Mouse's suspenders – Mickey Mouse never wore suspenders with his shorts.
  • Neil Armstrong is alive – He died in 2012. People just don't recall seeing his funeral, maybe that's why they don't remember his death.
  • "Objects in the mirror may be closer than they appear" – *"Might"*, not "may".
  • "The name's Bond. James Bond." – This one is technically true, but there's more than one variation of it. 1) "Bond. James Bond." (In response to "Mister—?") 2) "My name's Bond. James Bond." 3) "Name's Bond. James Bond." etc.
  • The peace symbol's diagonal lines are pointed upwards – They actually point down.
  • Tony the Tiger's black nose – Tony the Tiger, mascot of Kellogg's Frosted Flakes, actually has a blue nose.
  • Tostino's – It's "Totino's"; Totino's Pizza Rolls.
  • War, Death, Famine and Pestilence – Pestilence, the last of the Four Horsemen, was apparently originally Conquest.

Tier 7[edit]

  • Caprio cartons without the red banner – Caprio is a Polish juice brand that is famous (or shall I say infamous?) for the red banner on its cartons that nowadays says something to the effect of "two liters, great price", but used to imply…
  • Elisa Lam died in an closed tank – The tank she was found in had an open hatch, but that doesn't make the case of her death any less mysterious
  • Hitler had brown eyes – He was reported to have had blue eyes.
  • Muammar Gaddafi is alive – He was assassinated in 2011. Much like in Mandela and Neil Armstrong's case, I just believe this can be explained away by people not remembering hearing about it on the news.
  • Napoleon Bonaparte was missing a hand – No, he had two. He just famously hid one of his hands in the opening of his jacket on portraits, which historians suspect may have been from chronic stomach pain. He died in 1821 from a perforated…
  • New Zealand is to the west of Australia – New Zealand is, in fact, located to the east of Australia (or to the right on the map).
  • Patrick Swayze recovered from cancer – No... no, he died from pancreatic cancer in 2009, at 57 years old. He would have been 74 this year. It still breaks my heart. One of my favourite actors. (Perhaps they misunderstood him being in…
  • South America is directly south of North America – Not directly south, it also sits slightly more to the east.
  • The Challenger blew up in 1984/85 – The tragedy actually took place on January 28th, 1986.
  • The North Pole has land – The North Pole is just a mass of floating ice with no land underneath. The South Pole (Antarctica), however, does have land.
  • There are more than 50 states – Is this really a Mandela effect or is it just a matter of mass poor education? There are 50 stars on the US flag for a reason.
  • Tiananmen Square Tank Man was run over and killed – The video taken that day in 1989 doesn't show the man holding shopping bags and attacking the tank on Tiananmen Square getting run over by it, let alone killed. In fact, we don't know what happened…
  • Tsukuyomi is a female deity – Tsukuyomi is a male deity, the confusion probably come from Yo-kai Watch
