YouTube iceberg
A YouTube iceberg is a long-form explainer video that walks viewers tier-by-tier through an iceberg chart, usually with narration, screenshots of the chart, and short digressions on each labelled item. The format became a staple of commentary and "internet mystery" channels in the late 2010s and early 2020s.
Relationship to still charts
Still iceberg images circulated on Reddit, Imgur, and imageboards years before they were routinely narrated on YouTube. Videos solve a practical problem: charts pack dozens of obscure names into one image, and viewers want definitions. Creators therefore pause on each tier, summarise entries, and often link sources in the description.
Rise on the platform
Public discussion on Reddit's OutOfTheLoop and later magazine coverage pointed to gaming and conspiracy-adjacent charts around 2020–2021 as inflection points. The Super Mario 64 iceberg and similar game-lore explainers demonstrated that the format could hold multi-hour runtimes. Channels associated with Commentary YouTube and internet-history niches adopted icebergs alongside other digests (tier lists, "things you missed," lost-media roundups).
Conventions
Common video conventions include:
- opening with the full chart image;
- descending from surface tiers to "deepest" tiers;
- mixing documented facts, community jokes, and contested lore—with quality varying by creator;
- titles of the form "[Topic] Iceberg Explained."
