Internet folklore

Internet folklore is the body of legends, rumours, chain stories, rituals, and shared myths that circulate primarily online—analogous to traditional folklore but adapted to forums, chats, and video platforms. It includes creepypasta, hoax screenshots, cursed-image lore, and some "mystery" megathreads.

Charts as folklore indexes

An iceberg chart can function as a folk index: a community's graded map of which stories "everyone knows" versus which ones mark insider status. Folklorists and journalists studying digital legendry therefore sometimes treat charts and explainer videos as secondary evidence of what a community believes is canonical, not as proof that ranked items are true.
