Ranking format

A ranking format is any standardised layout people use to order items by preference, skill, familiarity, danger, or another axis. On the internet, popular ranking formats include tier lists, iceberg charts, top-ten listicles, bracket "who would win" trees, and scorecards.

Why formats matter

A reusable layout lowers the cost of argument: participants debate placements instead of reinventing presentation. Formats also become meme templates, accumulating in-jokes about what belongs on the "bottom tier" or "below the waterline."
